Being a fast follower means that rather than piloting and testing new technologies when they emerge, the aim is to jump on the wagon when the time is right. So how to do that? And when?

One thing we have decided is to become a Mission Ambassador to the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moeller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. With this partnership we agreed on a 3-year collaboration, obtaining firsthand information on relevant topics and getting access to projects that may support us in our decarbonisation challenge.

It is a very strong and growing independent organisation that has attracted major players in the industry to work together towards the same goal: the decarbonisation of shipping. This allows the Center to work on a high level and address topics like fuel availability, technology on board, market based measures, regulatory frameworks and many other topics that are required for the industry to reach zero carbon shipping in 2050.

To create clarity in future pathways and confidence to accelerate the needed developments and investments, the Center has several programmes that support the transition strategy. Experts from the industry on both ship technology as well as fuel supply chains are invited to work together on the three programmes: 1) zero-carbon fuel pathways, 2) energy efficiencies and 3) help first movers.

The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moeller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping was founded in 2020 and started with a $60 million donation by Maersk (A.P. Møller Foundation). The institute operates independently and aims to be a “visible and significant driving force in the global decarbonisation journey” to achieve a decarbonised maritime industry by 2050.
